    From the mint:
    Obverse
Samoas coat of arms features on the obverse side of 2020 Samoa Serpent of Milan 1 oz Silver Coins. The design was accepted by the government in June 1962 as the new coat of arms for the independent state. The shield has a cross above it with waves and a palm tree in the upper third, while the Southern Cross constellation is found in the lower two-thirds of the shield. The background includes concentric circles with olive leaves flanking the shield. The national motto Faavae I Le Atua Samoa is on a ribbon below the shield. This translates as Samoa is founded on God.
    Reverse
For the reverse field, 2020 Samoa Serpent of Milan 1 oz Silver Coins feature the Serpent of Milan from the House of Visconti. The house took control as rulers of the city of Milan in 1277 and ruled until 1447. The Lords, and later Dukes, of Milan adopted the serpent design during the time the house ruled the city. It depicts a snake slithering toward a young child and devouring it.
    History
The Serpent of Milan is not just an ancient symbol revived for a coin series. The serpent is still part of the symbolism of the modern city of Milan and is also found in the crest of the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo.
