The first generation Firebird has proven to be one of Pontiac’s most successful offerings. It not only is a great looking car, but also launched a hugely successful model that continued for the next 35 years. This 1969 example is a great market entry point featuring lots of recent work along with its original 350ci engine. It is also a great driving car with a classic look that’s hard to beat.
The body has all the flair of the 1969 version with its side creases and simulated fender vents. The paint and body are nice driver quality with a respray in the original color of Warwick Blue. The underside is solid except for some rust evidence along the right inner rocker and ahead of the left rear wheel. All chrome pieces, bezels, and lenses are in very good condition, while all the correct trim and emblems are also present. The aluminum 15” Weld wheels have staggered tire sizes of 165/80 in front and 275/60 in back, which gives the car a racy look.
Under the hood is the numbers-matching 350ci engine. Upgrades include an Edelbrock intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel carburetor. The transmission is a TH350 3-speed automatic feeding a 10-bolt rear end. The car has a great muscle car sound through the headers and Flowmaster mufflers. It is also equipped with both power steering and power front disc brakes, making it very easy for anyone to drive. There are also many new parts throughout including springs, bushings, ball joints, and more. It all gives the car a very solid feel without any squeaks or rattles.
The dark blue interior is stock appearing except for a modern underdash stereo and some door panel speakers. The standard bucket seats have both lap and shoulder belts, while the rear bench seat can hold three modest-sized passengers. There is also an attractive woodgrain center console that houses the shifter and a storage compartment. All lighting works properly including the low and high beams, turn signals, backup lights, dash lights, and courtesy lights. The horn, wipers, heater / defroster, parking brake, speedometer, and fuel gauge all work too.
Firebirds remain a very popular model, especially from the 1960’s. This one captures their spirit with the look and sound that started it all. It is also a lot of fun to drive and stands out as a bargain among soaring classic car prices.
