1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Coupe
Every now and then, an automaker releases a car that's nearly perfect in stock form. The list is short but the 1968 Chevelle SS is definitely one of those cars. Gaining a following that few Chevrolet's have seen outside of the Tri-Five world, nice examples never stick around our showroom for long.
This amazing 1968 Chevelle in Malibu trim comes complete with black vinyl top, a new paint job, and some snazzy extras to bring this car up to date and make it a custom Chevelle. Consigner states that there is less than 100 miles on the recently rebuilt motor and transmission. Stay tuned, same Bat channel, same Bat time!
Exterior
If we compare the trim tag to the actual car, we see that it is now LeMans Blue. This is different from the original factory K2 Turquoise. But that is not the point with this car. The idea brought forth is this is a custom build, and with upcoming features you will see why. The panels are very straight and gaps are minded well. The paint is overall very nice, with good shine and very few inclusions. A sporty wrap around black stripe runs horizontally from stem to stern just above the rockers. It begins upfront on the pointed front fenders which are at either side of the aggressively angled front grille which has dual blue halo headlights that flank a mostly black egg crate grille which sports a winged chromed bowtie badge in its center. It continues by dropping down, running straight rearward through the middle of the wheel wells. A hood mounted tachometer can be seen on the driver's side along with 2 small bumps in the center of the hood. Glass surrounds are nicely polished and a new black vinyl top is now on and looking great. On the back is a small spoiler painted the body matching Lemans Blue that has noticeable cracks in the mounting pedestals. Just below are horizontal wrap around the rear quarter taillights, and a nice polished bumper below. Dual chrome tipped exhaust pipes peek out from under the rear roll pan. 14 inch American Racing Torque Thrust polished 5 spokes are wrapped in new rubber on all 4 corners.
Interior
Very nicely preserved clean and straight padded door panels greet us as we swing the doors. In the passenger compartment there are chairs in black vinyl and bucket form also that have solid padding and a nice shine. A good looking center console races between the buckets, has a storage compartment, and houses the aircraft throttle style, (horseshoe), twin vertical post shifter. Looking to the dash we now see Dakota Digital Instruments still emulating their factory square shape, but all new. Original knobs are ere for wipers and headlights, but aftermarket cruise control is now on, as well as Vintage A/C and all the vents that go with it to keep that air circulating in this hot Chevelle. The steering wheel is original and next to this in dash central is a new AM/FM radio. The dash front is in black and the horizontal trim piece which runs through the dash is showing some wear above the glove box. Black carpeting is flooding the floors, and above is a tight headliner.
Drivetrain
Automotive jewelry would best describe the engine bay with a shiny black painted block, cast aluminum ribbed valve coverings, and now fuel injected. It is in 327ci form, and our decoding expert cannot discern whether it is numbers matching, but the consignor states it is. A TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is on back and power goes to the rear tires via a 10-bolt rear.
Undercarriage
Underneath is looking all good with very slight surface rust, an abundance of rustproofing/undercoating on some surfaces, and some have faded a bit, but all structurally sound. Drum brakes are all around, and a dual exhaust snakes its way rearward from the drip free underbelly of the engine.
Drive-Ability
After some cranking the engine came to life. It idles but you need to keep your foot on it as the EFI seems a bit testy. I shift to D and we are off like a prom dress! This car runs fine albeit that fuel injection needs to be managed with the accelerator. It is ergonomically near perfect for my stature which some may call mildly portly, and under 6 feet tall. Note this car had no rear brakes, (yikes!), no front signal lights and it was noticeably easier to turn right with a much smaller radius than turning left, (steering mechanism needs some work).
Probably the best year design wise for the Chevelle, they got it right with the angled front and rear, nicely placed chrome trim, and snazzy striping. The engine bay is just beautiful on this car, and despite not being what the trim tag states, it is a great combo. A pristine black vinyl top thrown in for some more contrast and the rally wheels with the black walls take anything away either. A classic right here at Classic Auto Mall.
